New Zealand hot water beach: worlds most unique place

This is going to be one of the most unique beaches in the world, and one of my absolute favourite spots in all of New Zealand: the amazing New Zealand hot water beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Imagine sitting on a hot beach warmed up by geothermal activity and having colder beach waves rolling to cool you down.

Watch as steam rises from the beach due to how hot the water is.

New Zealand or Aotearoa sits on fault lines, meaning there is a lot of geothermal activity up and down the country, and it just so happens that there is a lot of geothermal activity in the Coromandels at the famous New Zealand hot water beach.

It’s such a bizarre and unique phenomenon that you can’t help but feel it’s quite an incredible place as I spent half the time just laughing.

All you need to do is dig a hole in the sand and let the water fill up and you’ll find yourself bathing in a natural outdoor bath, on the beach as the waves roll in to cool you down.

Best activities & tours on North Island

The incredible New Zealand hot water beach

Honestly, the New Zealand hot water beach is just amazing and you’ll love every minute you spend there. Here’s everything you need to know about the incredible New Zealand hot water beach.

As you arrive, there will be many opportunities for you to rent a shovel which is not necessary, but definitely helpful.

It’s particularly helpful if you want to dig yourself a deep bath in the sand, or a little spa pool springs, because the sand can get quite hot. The deeper you dig, the hotter it gets, and the sand won’t have had a chance to cool down by the cool waves washing in.

It’s literally the most unique experience to sit in some warm waters – your very own spa.

There are facilities right next to all of the parking spaces where you have taps, showers and bathrooms, changing rooms and areas to sit down in the shade.

If you’re heading straight to the beach, make sure you take the path down and you’ll have to cross through the shallow stream running through the sand and head straight to the shore and then turn left.

You’ll see a number of rocks further down the coast around 100 to 200 metres away, and this is where you will find all of the geothermal hotspots on the beach.

Depending on what time of day you go, you might find that it can get quite busy, but there is always quite a lot of room for everyone.

We arrived at 10:30 in the morning and found there were probably 30 to 40 other people digging holes into the sand at the incredible New Zealand hot water beach.

This is where the fun starts!

Digging your own bath at Hot Water Beach Coromandel

It is now your job to find and select a spot to start digging at New Zealand hot water beach.

This can be the tricky part because you want to find the right spot.

It can get too hot!

You need to find an area on the beach where the sand and water beneath are being heated, thanks to the geothermal activity underneath. It also needs to be close enough to the shore that the cooler beach water can come in when the waves roll in so the hot water mixes with the cold water to make a nice bath water temperature.

If you find a spot that’s too far back from the shore it can get too hot, and you might not find the scalding temperature comfortable!

If you dig a bathtub too close to the ocean, you could get smashed by waves. And, it can get cooler.

So it is one of the most important decisions of the day to pick your spot and of course you need to not build on top of anyone else’s spot on the beach. This part is actually quite fun and we spent a good amount of time sticking the shovel into the Sun to see how hot it gets and assessing proximity to the waves.

Now is the best part.

Start digging away, so you can make yourself a nice bath on the beach. I suggest you build a mini wall around your bath, so it doesn’t completely get demolished by the waves and allows little inlets for cool water to seep in.

If it gets too cool with the waves rolling in and all you have to do is stir up the sand underneath your little water area because it is almost red hot, and it immediately warms up the water in your bath.

You’ll find that you are constantly readjusting the temperature, but that is definitely part of the fun!

We ended up making multiple parts up and down the beach, trying out and assessing which was the best spot, but beware as the day gets busier, people might have snagged the best spots.

Don’t miss…

Most people will create a hot bath and sit on it and miss one of the best parts which is if you actually go into the ocean, then you’ll find that the sand is fairly hot in the actual ocean as well.

If you stand in the sea, then your feet will be toasty and snug in the sand whilst the cool water washes around you, it’s such a bizarre experience and feeling that I cannot recommend enough. The hotspot inside the ocean is directly in front of where the hot vents are on the beach.

Rent a shovel

We also rented our shovel from Hot Waves Café for NZ$5 and the deposit is NZ$20, so as long as you return your shovel at the end of the day, then you’ll get your deposit back.

The shovel isn’t necessary for hot sand beach, but it makes it 10 times easier so I do recommend it as it’s a fairly cheap price.

Caution – how to not burn yourself

Bear in mind, the sand can get extremely hot.

I’m talking hot as a kettle, steam is literally rising from the sand, it will burn your feet off hot.

Mike sat down at one point and told me that he wasn’t sure if he burnt his bum or not and trust me, that’s not an area you want to have burnt. Mix the cool water in with the hot sand before you sit down, and you’ll be fine.

High tide or low tide?

Definitely visit at low tide because it’s best to visit when there’s more room on the beach, and there’s more space to enjoy the geothermal sandy spots on New Zealand hot water beach.

Also, bear in mind there’s not a lot of signal in the area so might be worth downloading maps in advance.

Where can I park?

The likelihood is that you will have to pay for parking, simply because it is a small town and the spaces by the beach fill up pretty quickly.

You might be able to park further up and down the street, but you might be in for a bit of a walk, so it’s best to just pay for parking close to the beach and head on down.

You can park in the car park for between 60 minutes and 120 minutes depending on the location. You might have to move your car if you decide to stay for longer.

Hot waves café day bar and gallery

This is a pretty quiet part of New Zealand, and there aren’t that many shops or Cafes nearby with the exception of Hot Waves Café. It’s literally a 1 minute drive from the beach or a 2 minute walk.

It’s a great place for lounging, grabbing a cup of coffee and a bite to eat, but just bear in mind that there is limited parking here, it’s only a one-minute walk to the beach so you could very easily walk here.

The café itself is pretty beautiful and the perfect boho hipster area to lounge and relax with deep, comfy sofas. There’s a lot of artwork hanging on all of the walls and they have huge windows which open up onto the outdoor terrace with lovely views of lush greenery that make you feel like you’re on holiday.

They do a great decaf latte and Americano, they serve all of the coffees with two shots of espresso.

Definitely worth a little pit stop here.

Car & Campervan Rental

It’s recommended that you either hire yourself, a camper van or a car, so you can explore North Island at your heart’s desire..

Depending on what time of year it can be really busy so it is worth looking at your stay well in advance. Bear in mind cost of hotels on your itinerary North Island New Zealand.

Summer in NZ

Temperature: In January, when it’s summer, the weather is warm on both North & South Island! The temperatures are around 23°C (73°F), while the South Island is a tad cooler, sitting at around 19°C (66°F).

But honestly, on some of the days it was BOILING in the summer, and reaching highs of 30°C (86°F) if not higher. Think, you’ll burn in 15 minutes outside without sun cream.

Rain: Both islands get about 8 rainy days, but you’ve got heaps of daylight to play with, around 15 hours a day. It’s like the sun just doesn’t wanna quit!

Fast forward to June, when it’s winter in NZ. Things start cooling down a bit, especially in the South Island. You’re looking at around 11°C (52°F) down there, while the North Island is still a bit milder, hovering around 15°C (59°F).

It’s a bit wetter too, with around 14 rainy days, but, you still get some solid daylight, about 9 hours or so.

So, that’s the gist of it! Both Islands have their pros & cons but frankly, they’re both beautiful.

Tours – Compare tour prices on Viator and Get Your Guide

Hotels – I always use Booking as the more hotels I book, I get a higher Genius discount. I also compare prices on Expedia.

E-Sims – purchase an e-sim with Airalo on your phone so you can make calls and have mobile data abroad! There’s no need to remove your current sim card!

Travel insurance – don’t ever go on vacation without travel insurance, you never know when you might need it!
