Do not miss Huka falls Taupo, some of the nicest waterfalls on North Island.

Think cerulean blue waters, raging river rapids and torrential waters, and some of the most spectacular sights you shouldn’t miss!

These beautiful waterfalls are only 10-15 minutes drive from the centre of Taupo and Taupo Lakeside and there are a tonne of walks you can do in the area.

It’s well worth a hike around the area, the trails range from easy and gentle to longer but still beautiful.

What you need to know

Huka Falls is an awesome choice and definitely a must on your road trip around North Island.

It’s located in the Taupo region of New Zealand’s North Island, just a short drive from Taupo town and Wairakei. You can easily find it along State Highway 1, about 5 kilometres north of Taupo.

When you arrive, prepare to be taking pictures straight away because that stunning azure blue rushing water as it tumbles over the edge into the chasm below is something pretty spectacular.

The car park is just outside the falls, less than a 30 second walk.

The car park, falls and trails are all free.

Trust me, it’s a sight you won’t forget!

Trails in the Area:

Spa Park to Huka Falls Track: This one’s a winner if you’re up for a leisurely stroll through the bush. It’ll take you from Spa Thermal Park to the falls and back again, covering about 7 kilometers in total. It’s about a 1 hour 30 walk.
Aratiatia Dam Walk: Fancy checking out some more rapids? Head over to the Aratiatia Dam Walk for a short stroll to the Aratiatia Rapids, it’s around 7km long.
Great Lake Trail: If you’re keen for a longer adventure, the Great Lake Trail is where it’s at. You can hike or bike your way around Lake Taupo, taking in some seriously epic views along the way.
Huka Falls Loop Track: This shorter loop track offers a more direct route to Huka Falls and is perfect for those short on time or looking for a quick nature fix. The track is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, providing stunning views of the falls from various vantage points.

Huka Falls isn’t just a pretty sight – it’s a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the North Island of New Zealand. And there’s a Maori legend about the falls being created by a brave chief… Here’s 9 facts:

Huka Falls is located on the Waikato River, just a 10-minute drive from Taupo.
It’s the longest river in New Zealand.
The Waikato River, normally up to 100 meters wide and 4 meters deep, narrows to just 15 meters at Huka Falls.
Approximately 200,000 litres of water flow over the nine-meter drop per second, creating a stunning spectacle.
The strong flow and current of the falls prevent fish like eels and trout from migrating upstream.
Huka Falls produces 15% of New Zealand’s total power.
The falls’ appearance changes daily, with heights plummeting between 7-11 meters, controlled by a hydro plant.
The turquoise color of the river at Huka Falls is one of the most beautiful mixes of green and blue.
The sound of the falls is deafening as they crash through the narrow canyon, showcasing their immense power.

What to Do:

Check Out the Falls: Obviously, the main event here is the falls themselves. Whether you’re standing on the viewing platform or taking a stroll along one of the walking tracks nearby, you’ll be treated to an incredible view of the turquoise-blue water crashing down into the gorge. Don’t forget your camera – this is Instagram gold!
Go Mountain biking: Cycling is a common activity here, and it’s clear why; the scenery is beautiful and the trails are great.
Jet Boating: If you’re a bit of a thrill-seeker, you’ll love the jet boat rides on offer here. They river cruise will take you right up close to the base of the falls for some fairly fun and very wet views. Get ready for some serious speed and maybe a bit of spray!
Hit the Trails: Surrounding Huka Falls are some awesome hiking trails that’ll take you through native bush and along the riverbank. My favourite is the Spa Park to Huka Falls Track – it’s an easy walk with some seriously stunning scenery along the way.
Picnic Time: Feeling peckish? There are picnic areas near the falls where you can relax and enjoy a bite to eat surrounded by nature. Pack a lunch, find a shady spot, and soak up the tranquility – it’s the perfect way to refuel for more adventures.
Wildlife Watching: Keep your eyes peeled for native birds like tui and fantails flitting about in the trees. You might even spot some trout leaping out of the water as they navigate the rapids. Nature at its finest!

Summer in NZ

Temperature: In January, when it’s summer, the weather is warm on both North & South Island! The temperatures are around 23°C (73°F), while the South Island is a tad cooler, sitting at around 19°C (66°F).

But honestly, on some of the days it was BOILING in the summer, and reaching highs of 30°C (86°F) if not higher. Think, you’ll burn in 15 minutes outside without sun cream.

Rain: Both islands get about 8 rainy days, but you’ve got heaps of daylight to play with, around 15 hours a day. It’s like the sun just doesn’t wanna quit!

Fast forward to June, when it’s winter in NZ. Things start cooling down a bit, especially in the South Island. You’re looking at around 11°C (52°F) down there, while the North Island is still a bit milder, hovering around 15°C (59°F).

It’s a bit wetter too, with around 14 rainy days, but, you still get some solid daylight, about 9 hours or so.

So, that’s the gist of it! Both Islands have their pros & cons but frankly, they’re both beautiful.
