Lahangan Sweet: epic viewpoint of Mt Agung, East Bali

Lahangan Sweet Bali

Lahangan Sweet is probably one of my favourite places in East Bali. It’s a viewpoint of the most beautiful scenic landscape in Bali (in my opinion!). Lahangan sweet have set things up pretty cleverly, so there are plenty of lookout points along the cliff edge, meaning there are a tonne of spots for people to stop, relax and admire the view.

Lahangan Sweet overlooks Mount Agung, which is a beautiful active volcano in the East of Bali. It’s definitely worth a day trip here as it is one of the best Bali viewpoints you’ll come across, you can easily pass the time admiring the beautiful rice paddies along the way, the luscious palm trees and dramatic, jagged mountains that rise up above you. Here is your complete guide to Lahangan Sweet!

Lahangan Sweet Location & Mount Agung

Mount Agung is an active volcano located in Bali, Indonesia, situated to the southeast of another Bali volcano, Mount Batur. As the highest peak in Bali, it holds a position of prominence casting everything into its shadow and it even shapes the weather; including how rainfall is distributed as the clouds push up against the land. The mountain gives an illusion of having a perfectly spherical cone shape, but if you get closer you’ll notice that it’s not quite so.

The peak is a staggering 3,142 meters above sea level and Mt. Agung influences the climate in its vicinity. The rainfall is intercepted by its slopes on the western side, causing lushness and fertility on that aspect, whereas the eastern slopes stay arid and dry.

Mt Agung viewpoint: Lahangan Sweet

The Balinese hold the belief that Mt. Agung serves as the dwelling place for the Gods, meaning the mountain has a sacred status.

At the top of this mountain is The temple of Bali, named Pura Besakih Great Temple. Be warned though, you’ll need to climb a phenomenal amount of steps to get to the top!. However, there are some stairs that have a gentler incline; this is to make it easier for the women who carry offerings on the top of their heads.

It’s definitely worth a visit to Pura Besakih during the Galungan celebrations, a time when the entrance and temple are decorated with towering bamboo poles, coconut leaves, and blossoms making for a pretty spectacular sight. Throughout this occasion, a group of women put on their finest white attire (which I was told are worn during spiritual ceremonies when I got involved in one!) and they carry stacks of tropical and exotic fruits and flowers on top of their heads.

Overlooking the temple stands the imposing figure of Mt. Agung, which is clearly meant to be one of the most spectacular sights with the impressive viewpoint Bali, too. If you’re wondering when the Galungan celebrations are; it’s worth a google search! The celebration follows the Balinese Pawukon cycle, which is a 210 day cycle following the Gregorian calendar.

How to get to Lahangan Sweet

Reaching the Lahangan Sweet viewpoint is pretty easy but there’s a few things you need to know before you go. Type Lahangan Sweet onto Google Maps, situated near the city of Amed which is where our tour driver was from. You will probably need to stop when you get to the dirt road -You’ll see a wooden sign that directs you to a dirt road. This dirt track up the mountain can be quite steep, with lots of holes and crevices and I wouldn’t recommend you drive up on a moped – take a 4×4 off roading vehicle, or walk up. Just before the dirt road is a parking area, where most mopeds and tours and cars are left.

Lahangan Sweet to Ubud

We actually stayed in Ubud and ensured our tour guide took us back to Ubud; just double check that they will cover you to and from your hotel.

Walk up, or hire an off road jeep?

You then have 2 options:

  • Take a 20 minute walk to reach the viewpoint – it’s a bit steep and rocky but easily doable!
  • Hire one of the many off road jeeps that will take you up. This costs around 100 IDR per person (around 50p or 66 cents).

We opted to take the off road jeep because we were making it for sunset, and we wanted to make sure we got there in plenty of time. So we figured, it’s better to pay and witness the incredible sunset, and it also helps some of the locals too. The 4×4 off roading jeep was quite bumpy – a lot of us in the back were bumping heads and falling all over the place, so be ware!

And, frankly, it was a tad scary on the way back down as by this time it was fairly dark after the sun had set, meaning we were going down in the fark, it was almost pitch black! Knowing there’s a steep cliff on either side of you can be a tad scary too, but in reality it was fine.

Tours to Lahangan Sweet Bali

We opted to take tour to Lahangan Sweet so we didn’t have to worry about traffic (and potentially getting lost ourselves), and we decided to go for sunset, so it was an afternoon tour, and we wanted to make sure we got there in plenty of time. Our tour was great, actually! Have a look below for some of the best tours to Lahangan Sweet.

Many tours actually don’t offer a stop at Lahangan Sweet, despite it being so close to Gate of Heaven Lempuyang Temple – if your tour to East Bali doesn’t cover it, maybe consider asking your tour guide if they can fit it in. Alternatively, book a specific one to Lahangan Sweet below:

Our tour was from Selat/Ubud area and our full day tour took around 8 hours, leaving at 1pm and returning home after dark.

The different viewpoints of Lahangan Sweet

There are plenty of different photo spots at Lahangan Sweet, which is great because it means you can admire lots of different viewpoints of Mount Agung when others get busy. They are also constructing loads more, from what we could see! Some viewpoints are more popular than others, meaning that there are queues, and they actually have a ticketing system in place for some of them; for example, the tree platform you get a maximum of 2 minutes to enjoy that viewpoint before you move on.

This is usually because there are so many people, and they want everyone to get a turn to take photos. There are almost no tourists at sunset, and because there was almost no one there, we spent as long as we wanted with this peaceful view.

This is another viewing wooden platform and frankly, it’s great, quiet and there was no one bothering us! It’s stunning. So, if you’re like us and want to enjoy the views in peace without tonnes of tourists and people, then I strongly recommend going at sunset.

Best time to visit Lahangan Sweet

Sunrise or sunset at Lahangan Sweet Karangasem?

The best time of day to go is sunset, but this depends on your preferences, but honestly, a Lahangan Sweet sunset is a dream!

Lahangan Sweet Sunrise is also meant to be very good. There’s almost no one else there bar a couple of tourists, and you’ll be able to enjoy the views unobstructed, without needing to queue and adhere to a time limit!

Be aware of the cloud formations too – in my experience, I found that in early morning and late afternoon that the clouds clear and you get clear views of Mount Agung.

Lahangan Sweet is actually a great place to watch the sunset, as the viewpoints faces westwards, meaning you’ll see the sun glow! And witness the most incredible viewpoint in Bali!

Have a look below to see what time the sun sets for each month of the year.

East Bali Tours

There are plenty of tours to East Bali and I would recommend getting out of the city (or wherever you’re based!) for a trip to East Bali. It has so many sights and attractions, and you can easily spend the day here. You’ll pass by hundreds of scenic rice terraces layered into mountains, luscious palm trees that extend above you alongside mountainous terrain. Your tour might might also take you to visit Gembleng Waterfall, Tukad Cepung Waterfall, Virgin Beach Bali or Tembok Black Sand Beach.

Lahangan sweet is in Karangasem, which is just 15 minutes from the famous Lempuyang Temple and around 30 minutes away from Tirta Gangga Water Palace; we did this as part of our tour, but Lempuyang Temple was particularly crowded, so we decided not to wait for 4-5 hours for the ‘famous’ photo!

Pura Lempuyang Luhur

If you are in the area and have a bit of spare time, make sure you check out Pura Lempuyang Luhur. This temple offers a breathtaking view of Mount Agung volcano and is a definite must-visit, particularly if you’re spending a few days in Amed. It’s absolutely worth the visit while you’re staying in Amed.

Heaven’s Gate

Don’t go to the traditional Heaven’s Gate if you can help it. They’re building an alternative Heaven’s Gate at Lahangan Sweet!

You’ll be queuing for 4-5 hours at the original!

Heaven’s gate is the iconic, famous viewpoint in Bali that everyone has a photo at. It’s all over instagram, and all over the internet, you’ll definitely recognise it.

But these days, it’s honestly not worth going unless you go SUPER early. If you don’t want to queue for hours, make sure you go before sunrise. Most people need to queue for 4-5 hours to get their photos taken here – all it is, is an entrance to the golf course, but yes, it does have pretty spectacular views of Mt Agung too!

So it might be best to wait until they build ‘Gate of Heaven Lempuyang Temple’ – also known as Heaven’s gate at Lahangan Sweet!
