The beautifully hot geothermal waters is a great way to unwind and relax on your South Island trip.
One of my favourites was Tekapo Springs star gazing experience at night from the thermal hot pools, and the Onsen hot pools in Queenstown.

Best Hot Springs & hot pools South Island
There are plenty of hot pools for you to visit on South Island!
Sit back, relax and let the geothermal waters do their thing. Whether a full pamper experience or just relaxation in a tub, there is something for everyone.
Onsen Hot pools Queenstown
The Onsen hot pools are fairly famous to Queenstown, and of course, come with some of the most beautiful, iconic scenery that anyone could hope for.
I have a full guide on the Onsen hot pools near Queenstown and I recommend you through it as this is one of the most stunning places that you could hope to visit on your south island itinerary.
You get full hour to sit back relax and enjoy the hot pools in private and there is, of course the added bonus of the snacks that come with the experience we opted for ice creams and fresh juices to start our day.


Tekapo Springs
Tekapo hot springs is another crown jewel for your South Island itinerary. I love visiting Lake Tekapo, it’s stunning!
This was actually one of my favourite places in all of South Island and we spent an entire day here relaxing and enjoying the various pools as well as the short walk to the adrenaline fun of 150 meter drop slide and the mini golf.
There are five different pools at different temperatures sauna, steam room, plunge pool children’s play area and if that wasn’t enough, the café is outstanding and spectacular.
These outdoor pools are pretty outstanding and it’s not too far from Lake Pukaki so I recommend you taking a Mount Cook road trip to see the Mount Cook National Park – it’s not that far a drive!
They do a great healthy Buddha bowl and the spa treatments here are very good! I got the Vitamin C facial! My favourite South Island Hot Pools!

Star gazing hot Springs South Island
They also do a stargazing experience from the hot pools at night which is phenomenal and out of this world. It is the ultimate outdoors hot pools South Island experience. My favourite NZ spa!
I highly recommend you book this experience as there’s nothing quite like it.
I’ve seen so far into the night’s sky from a telescope and thankfully, whilst floating on a beautifully warm lilo in the pool!

Hanmer Springs is I don’t go just place to stay on your South Island itinerary.
It is the perfect spa-cation for anyone that’s doing a road trip.

Whacky Stays Kaikoura
Okay, so this is not technically a hot pool, but this Wacky day does come with an outdoor hot tub where you can watch llamas and alpacas right from your tub so it deserves a spot on this list.
It’s the singlehanded most fun and hilarious experience you should visit!

These natural hot pools in South Island is accessible via a scenic hike.
These hot springs have the ultimate secluded retreat for those looking to unwind and sit back and relax.
The springs are surrounded by native bush and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Whether you’re looking to chillax and soak in the healing waters or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the wilderness, Wren Creek Hot Springs should absolutely be on your list.
The closest hotel is probably Woodstock Motel just off the West Coast. It’s also near to the Franz Josef & Fox Glacier, so I recommend doing a tour here if you can!

Temperature: In January, when it’s summer, the weather is warm on both North & South Island! The temperatures are around 23°C (73°F), while the South Island is a tad cooler, sitting at around 19°C (66°F).
But honestly, on some of the days it was BOILING in the summer, and reaching highs of 30°C (86°F) if not higher. Think, you’ll burn in 15 minutes outside without sun cream.
Rain: Both islands get about 8 rainy days, but you’ve got heaps of daylight to play with, around 15 hours a day. It’s like the sun just doesn’t wanna quit!

Fast forward to June, when it’s winter in NZ. Things start cooling down a bit, especially in the South Island. You’re looking at around 11°C (52°F) down there, while the North Island is still a bit milder, hovering around 15°C (59°F).
It’s a bit wetter too, with around 14 rainy days, but, you still get some solid daylight, about 9 hours or so.
So, that’s the gist of it! Both Islands have their pros & cons but frankly, they’re both beautiful.
