Ubud’s secret rice field: Banjar Mancingan Rice trekking

Banjar Mancingan Rice Trekking is actually one of my favourite places in Ubud. It’s definitely a hidden gem and you’ll want to visit this very authentic, local spot. If you want to stroll amongst the locals, see genuine farming practises amongst swaying palm trees, you wont want to miss the rice trekking here.
I discovered this secret rice field by looking at Google Maps and it was marked as a point of interest and coming in with a rating of 4.9, I couldn’t resist exploring. This is a local, working rice field and as you arrive you’ll see a lot of locals working the fields, gathering rice, sifting through rice and laying it out to dry. It is one of the most authentic experiences you’ll come across in Ubud and you’ll definitely meet the locals.

Banjar Mancingan Rice Trekking Bali
Banjar Mancingan Rice Trekking is a total hidden gem and you’re likely not to spot many other tourists here. We did in fact come across a lot of other people in the area; locals. The locals spend the day driving up and down the pathway that runs down the centre of the rice paddy fields; as you walk down the pathway, there are rice paddies that stretch for (seemingly) miles in the distance. It’s a great view at sunset.
Sit back and relax; watch the locals prepare rice in a great amount of detail. Watch as they harvest rice and then sift through the rice to remove some of the husks and plant material. After this, the rice is laid out to dry on huge sheets in the sun. It’s something special.

Banjar Mancingan Rice Terrace hiking trail
Banjar Mancingan Rice Paddy is generally an easy stroll; the area to park your moped is just outside, and you’ll find that the pathways are gently sloping. Be wary of the pathway; it’s fairly thin, and there are often locals riding up and down the pathway on their motorbikes and mopeds, so you’ll need to nip to the side to let them pass. They often have plants and rice bundles on their mopeds, so it’s an important mode of transport for them.
Banjar Mancingan Rice trekking Hiking trail
If you want to do a hike around the area, if you were to walk from the centre of Ubud, it would take you around 3 hours 48 walking, just bear in mind that there’s not an easy way to get back; there’s not always a lot of signal and no ubers in the area.
Don’t miss on your hike – head to Cekingan Rice Terrace is Bayad Waterfall (pictured below) and Manuaba Waterfall. It’s worth doing both! There are plenty of hidden gems nearby you should definitely visit!

Banjar Mancingan Rice Terrace Opening Hours
Banjar Mancingan Rice trekking has no official opening time as this is a public area, so it’s just as the daylight hours allow. For this reason, I have included sunrise and sunset time in the ‘Weather’ section below. This Bali Rice Terrace is open to tourists all year unless there’s bad weather. But be wary of the slippery pathways during the rainy season or monsoon season. The dry season in Indonesia is usually from May to October.

If you do go hiking further in the distance, don’t hike back in the dark after the sun has set as it can get a little slippery if it’s been raining and there is a little stream next to the pathway – Don’t fall in this.

Banjar Mancingan Rice Terrace Restaurant & Bar
Warung Sripadi is a local eatery just around the corner from Banjar Mancingan Rice Terrace. The food here is cheap and cheerful and serves typical Indonesian dishes.
There are plenty of Warungs around. A “warung” is a small, often family-owned, traditional Indonesian restaurant or small food stall. Warungs serve local Balinese dishes that are usually cheap and cheerful. The most common dishes are nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles – yum), chicken sate (skewers), and whatever you do, don’t miss the peanut sauce, it’s the best thing ever!

There are plenty of companies that will take you on an Ubud Waterfall Tour, or a Waterfall Tour in East Bali. A lot of the waterfalls tours will take you to other destinations and activities in the area on a full day tour, such as Lahangan Sweet: Epic East Bali viewpoint, Tirta Gangga, and Mount Agung, although often trips can be customised, especially if it’s a personalised tour. There are a tonne of attractions you could visit and things to see.
You might want to visit local villages & national parks, or spots such as Tukad Cepung Waterfall, Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, Nungnung Waterfall, Tegallalang Rice Terraces Walk or water rafting. Don’t forget to watch (or get on) some of the famous Bali swings for a fun afternoon out in Bali. There are also tours a little further out, like Nusa Penida if you’re interested, it is highly recommended!
Keep an eye out, you’ll likely spot tonnes of rice terraces, endless rice fields, and luscious palm trees. It’s a great ride through the less touristy, and perhaps more authentic, Balinese countryside, an experience you should do at least once when you’re in Bali.
