Trusted House Sitters Review
Here’s my Trusted Housesitters review, starting from the beginning! We’ve been travelling full time for 550+ days, and we started in Asia.
We didn’t really use Trusted house sitters in Asia. In Asia, the cost of hotels were around hotels were £15 a night; Bali and Indonesia have beautifully stunning bamboo villas on the beach, but when we arrived in America, I discovered that all of the hotels were $200, and I know this might be fine if you’re on holiday for a week or two… but not so much long term!
easily spending $6000-$10,000 a month on hotels in the USA
If you’re staying every single night in a hotel you can easily spending $6000-$10,000 a month on hotels in the USA. Yes, they will definitely be some cheaper alternatives, some cheaper places but in some of the cities is it just wasn’t feasible and I wasn’t mega keen on blowing through a ton of cash very quickly.
Before we even went travelling, I heard about trusted housesitters, and I kept it saved on my phone somewhere and it just so happened that I was reminded to recommend it to my mum; she had just moved back home to Australia and was looking to buy a house. The legal process to buy her house was taking around a month and a half to 2 months.
She was looking for somewhere to live temporarily, so I recommended to my mum that she should try TrustedHousesitters as it was something that I had heard about.
Now this is what sparked it all – my mum set up housesits for two months while she was waiting for the purchase of her house to go through and she told us how incredible it was to simply look after some pets in exchange for free accommodation.

This really inspired us to consider using Trusted HouseSitters as a viable option for travelling in more costly locations such as the USA and it’s been such a game changer!
Our accomodation expenses in the USA was less than $5 a night which is insane considering that hotels are easily $200 upwards.
It’s completely transformed the way that we travel.
We have stayed in some really beautiful homes across the USA; from New Mexico to Las Vegas to LA to Utah: Salt Lake City and all of them have given us such a different experience.
Right now we are in a beautiful medieval villa in Tuscany, Italy looking after some really cute dogs and it’s such a wonderful experience because you actually get to interact with a lot of the locals as well, and see a completely different way of life to if you were just saying in hotel.
Don’t get me wrong I love hotels, I love having a beautifully relaxing retreat and spas but we’ve been travelling for over 550 days now and it can get a bit tiring sometimes. I missed having a kitchen with fully functioning stoves and pots and pans and there were so many times where we would rent an Airbnb and there would be missing cutlery and all the basics which is starting to become quite frustrating.
So this is definitely a different experience to hotel, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it worse!

When we arrived in Italy, our hosts were kind enough to pick us up from the airport and take us to the beautiful villa in the Tuscan countryside. There is super hospital they even prepared some dentist for us using a lot of the fresh vegetables and herbs from their garden and honestly that was some of the best pasta I’ve ever had.
They welcomed us with a adorable little food basket as well as letting us use their car and they even took us on a mini tour around the region so we know the best places to visit whilst we’re here .
Needless to say, if we had done this through hotel or tour, we would be paying literal thousands and this entire experience has been free aside from shopping costs from the supermarket .
It really is that good.
Because we’re travelling full time, we envisaged that we would probably use trusted house to so we’ve paid for the higher level of service however it’s up to you to decide what level you want to go for and how much you’ll be using it
Trusted housesitters – how does it work?
People with pets need someone to look after their little fur babies whilst they are away on holiday / whilst they’re away on business trips and it can be quite costly to send them to kennels.
So in exchange for looking after their pets, you get to stay in their homes free of charge (excluding the sign up fee). It’s really as simple as that.
Dog kennels and pet sitting companies do charge quite a lot and the basic cost is quite high and this often doesn’t include dog walking so your pets could literally be cooped up in a small for the entire time you’re on holiday.
Additionally, this is completely disrupting the pets life – sending them somewhere where they have never been before potentially with different food regimes, different routines, different schedules and a completely foreign environment.
On the other hand, Trusted House Sitters will have someone who is fully dedicated to looking after your pets, to their schedule, that feeds them the same food, the routine is exactly the same. It is literally just the person that’s a bit different.
I was also chatting someone recently about the name Trusted Housesitters the element of trust comes into conversation quite a lot because the person who is going to house sit and look after other peoples pets has to trust that they feel safe in someone else’s home and particularly with women this is something that they’ve Talked about.
On the flipside people would often look at their pets as part of their family and beloved members or even their little furry children. Pet parents are a thing! People adore their pets and so the thought of having someone come in to look after a member of their family that they love so much is actually a huge deal.
So both sides have quite a lot at stake, and that’s why it’s really important for TrustedHousesitters to have external reviews. for each housesit that we’ve done we have always had video calls with the hosts in advance to ensure that we’re a good fit that we’re happy with the needs of the animals and every time it’s been absolutely fine.
As I’m making this blog post, I have the cutest tiniest little dachshund sleeping next to me and quite frankly it is the cutest little buddy that I could actually ever hope for.
I thought it was a puppy but apparently you do get these really small dachshunds that stay puppy size their entire life and it’s freaking adorable to be honest with you!
About the homes you stay in
More often than not the hosts are exceedingly warm & welcoming and they prepare one of their rooms for you and encourage you to make the house your own.
The Italian Home that we are currently in actively schedules house sits every single year with the same people because they love going back and forward so much. I’ve also heard about house sitters who house swap so they go to each other houses.
There are so many ways of doing it, but really it’s a great mutually beneficial service for both parties .
There are houses available all over the world, but obviously they are not available 24/7. It is simply for when the hosts are away or on holiday.
Trusted House Sitters is particularly popular in the USA and the UK and in some countries in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
In the UK, there is in excess of 3600 available hosts so you can pretty much explore the entirety of the UK using TrustedHousesitters and is definitely all across the USA (there are definitely some ridiculous mansions there).
It also popular across Europe, some countries a lot more popular than others and I think this is something to do with how many people actually use TrustedHousesitters.
Right now, there is an Italian house sit in the south of Italy that is three months long which I would 100% take, however we have a number of different jobs meeting that we would need to be away for period of time but I would strongly recommend if you are a remote worker to definitely consider the TrustedHousesitters program.

What kind of animals will I be looking after?
This totally depends on each house. The host will let you know what type of animal and he’ll be your responsibility to have a look through their profile to see if you would be a good match.
We’ve looked after:
- Dogs
- Cats
- Rabbits
- Guinea Pigs
- Pigeons
- Chickens
- Tortoises!
To be honest, they’ve all been pretty simple and easy!
What does a good profile look like?
And how can I optimise my chance of being selected for House Sit?
It’s important you make sure you upload some good profile pictures ideally pictures of yourself with animals and get a review from someone – anyone of your friends that might have a pet or a parent or a family member where you have looked after their pet and they’re comfortable giving you a glowing review.
Ideally, some pictures of you walking dogs or holding cats (or any type of animal) is a good indication that you are quite comfortable around animals.
Additionally, it would be a good idea to write a comprehensive summary of your experience with different animals.
I grew up with dogs and I grew up around animals and I generally adore them so I find it very natural to talk about my experience and how much I love them.
And pretty much straight away we’ve been accepted onto housesits and it’s been pretty straightforward and easy.
Do you ever have to look after challenging animals?
Honestly, this really depends. Each case is different! Before you look after any animals you usually have a video call with the owners who explain the needs of their pets. It’s then up to both of you to decide whether it’s a good fit or not. We have had some animals that have more needs than others – it’s just up to you to explain.
Perfect for holidayers, Digital nomads and remote workers
I can’t recommend it enough. If you’re a digital nomad or work remotely at all I strongly recommend that this is something that you try out it’s a great way to save money and visit some incredible places!
I would definitely go off to some of the amazing incredible villas you see in Portugal the beach or next to the cities like it is just incredible and I would go work there for a week or two.
