Christmas in Colmar: The Colmar Christmas Markets
The Colmar Christmas markets are utterly enchanting, and quite possibly, the most beautiful in all of Europe. Putting aside the fact that the entire city looks like a Disney movie set, the decorations are out of this world, as are the fairy lights, Christmas trees and ice rinks. They seem to go out of their way to decorate everything as lavishly as possible; Teddy bears are firm favourites for decorating the outsides of peoples homes, enchanting post boxes with letters directed to Santa Claus and reindeer figurines on every corner. A trip to Colmar can be appreciated by literally anyone; families, children, groups of friends, and couples will find something for everyone here. This is your ultimate Colmar Christmas Market guide. You should spend at least 2-3 days in Colmar minimum, if you want to enjoy this incredible town and it is a great base to explore some of the other villages.
The magic of Christmas in Colmar is really made by the enchanting ambiance of the Old Town, lit up with 1000s of lights like a fairy tale. Being predominantly a pedestrianised city centre, Colmar town's buildings are not just beautiful; they're historically significant too and you'll want to wander around aimlessly soaking in all the monuments, churches, museums, and alleys, featuring impressive buildings dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
Don't forget to also visit Eguisheim Christmas Markets which is just 10 minutes from Colmar.
And of course, the Christmas markets themselves are completely free! Browse and spend as you see fit! You can also join one of the many guided tours; we joined a free walking tour and it turned out to be one of my favourite things. It meant we were able to learn a little more about the incredible history of this amazing town and you give a tip at the end to the guide on how much you think the tour was worth.
Stepping away from the Christmas markets is worthwhile for various fascinating museums. Among them is the Unterlinden Museum, boasting an extensive array of historical and contemporary artworks, and the Bartholdi Museum, dedicated to honouring Frederic Bartholdi, renowned for crafting the Statue of Liberty. Notably, a replica is situated just outside the city centre which we were lucky enough to pass by!

The Six Christmas Markets of Colmar
Additionally, the actual Christmas markets! In fact, there are six different markets in Colmar, each with a different theme and with their own set of unique characteristics.
These markets align with the city-wide celebration called the Magic of Christmas in Colmar, featuring illuminating displays in each of the six markets and it is straight up magical.
As the town centre is pedestrianised, you can effortlessly (and somewhat aimlessly) wander from market to market and square to square, admiring the lights, the Christmas trees, the decorations and festivities in every location.
What are the 6 Christmas markets of Colmar?
Place des Dominicains, Place de l'Ancienne Douane, Jeanne d'Arc ; Koïfhus and The Gourmet Food Market at Place de la Cathédrale. Read more about each one!
1. Places des Dominicains
At the market's centre stands the Dominican Church, its remarkable 14th-century stained glass art. Beneath the illuminated ambiance of this historical church, sixty market stalls huddle together, selling decorations, souvenirs, handicrafts, Christmas trees, snacks and festive meals for all the Christmas market visitors.

2. Petite Venise: The Children's Market
Petit Venise, or 'Little Venice' is arguably the most beautiful place in all of Colmar, and is certainly my favourite. It's made as a child's kingdom! Created with kids in mind, both the young and the old are captivated by this place which is surrounded by 43 vibrant vendors, where you'll discover numerous treasures before pausing to admire the nativity scene. It's challenging to depart from this market without sipping warm spiced apple juice, riding the carousel horses, and dropping a letter to Santa in the giant mailbox. And yes, all of us rode the carousel horses as adults and I don't regret it one bit!
Don't forget to also visit Eguisheim Christmas Markets which is just 10 minutes from Colmar.
3. Place de l'Ancienne Douane - Old Custom House Square
The Place de l'Ancienne Douane, also known as the "Old Custom House Square," is a prominent square located in the heart of Colmar, France. The square is named after the Old Custom House (Koïfhus), a historic building dating back to the 15th century that once was a bustling trading hub where vendors sold their wares, and of course, it was a medieval Christmas market and it's not that different today! Nearly 50 Christmas market stalls sit around the fountain of Schwendi in this lovely square, extending along the river.

4. Koïfhus
Once night falls, you will enjoy a marvellous spectacle: the Koïfhus building and its impressive Renaissance staircase will be dressed in shimmering lights, bringing a touch of magic to the Old Customs House and its typical Christmas market. By night, the old customs Koïfhus, a genuine masterpiece of medieval architecture, is delicately adorned with lights that enhance the beauty of the Christmas market.
If you need a break from the cold or if it's raining, head to Koïfhus as it is an indoor market. Stop by their famous toy museum!

Don't forget to also visit Eguisheim Christmas Markets which is just 10 minutes from Colmar.
5. Place Jeanne D'Arc
This market recreates the intimate atmosphere of a traditional Alsatian village thanks to its Christmas houses, its church and its small herd of sheep. Dedicated to local products, this market recreates the intimate atmosphere of an Alsatian village with its half-timbered houses, churches, and animals. It presents a wide array of delicious foods, including Alsatian traditional products such as charcuterie, wine, brandies, Christmas cakes, gingerbread, and much more. Try the gingerbread and the charcuterie if you can.. and the wine. Try it all, it's delicious!

6. Place de la Cathédrale - the Gourmet Food Market
Place de la Cathédrale, situated right next to St. Martin's Church, hosts the Christmas market known as the Gourmet Market, a food lover's paradise! If you're after Gourmet Christmas food then look no further!
At this market, you'll find a variety of delicious gourmet foods exclusive to the Alsace region, including flammekueche (a type of Alsatian pizza), and spaetzle (literally translated to little sparrow, is a type of egg noodle originating from German speaking countries including Switzerland, Germany and Austria. And let me tell you, the mulled wine here is something else. The mulled wine is utterly divine, I must've had 50 cups for the week I was there.
They do also sell the controversial foie gras, so something to be aware of!
