Amazing places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days

The Blue City India viewpoint

Jodhpur: The Blue City is my bucket list destination 101, and gets my vote for most underrated location in India. There’s a lot to pack into your itinerary, so here’s amazing places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days! It’s known as the Blue City of India or the Blue Heaven of India because of the cobalt blue buildings dotted around most of the old town, reminiscent of Morocco’s Chefchaouen.

But unlike Chefchaouen, the blue paintings and murals all over the city give it the strong Indian flavour you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Aside from the stunning viewpoints and historic sites, simply wandering through the streets of Jodhpur City is a unique and unforgettable experience. The blue-painted buildings create a dreamlike atmosphere, and the bustling bazaars offer a chance to experience the local culture and traditions. From trying the delicious street food to haggling for souvenirs, every moment in Jodhpur was pretty epic, so here’s your full travel guide, try to fit in as much as you can.

Why is Jodhpur painted blue?

There seem to be a lot of theories as to why the city is painted blue. Apparently the cobalt blue paint deters termites, which historically the city had a problem with, so locals would cover their buildings in the stuff. Places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days: all the blue alleyways in the town centre!

Others say that the blue paint also keeps the houses cool in the summer. Additionally they say that the colour blue was used by town elders and priests to associate themselves with royalty. Whatever the reason, it makes for beautiful architecture and beautiful photography.

The locals add their own touch by painting murals all over the old town and it’s just beautiful to walk around and have a look and of course, take some photos.

Best hotels in Jodhpur

There are plenty of incredible places to stay in Jodhpur, make sure it is one of them! The cost here is exceptionally reasonable. Have a look at the top rated Jodhpur hotels here, some of which are incredible working palaces:

Daspan House

Radisson Park Plaza Jodhpur

Umaid Bhavan Palace Jodhpur

Indana Palace Jodhpur

Ratan Vilas Jodhpur

Bal Samand Lake Palace

Places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days: My favourite has to be Daspan house, pictured.

Staying at Daspan house makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time to 1921. To me this hotel is truly magical in a way I haven’t experienced with other hotels; it’s like the secret garden. As you step in from the dusty road outside, the hustle and bustle of the city falls away you emerge into an oasis of calm green gardens, tinkling fountains and exquisite design and décor.

Umaid Bhavan Palace

This one is not going to come in cheap, but it is certainly going to be memorable. This incredible palace is definitely worth a visit on your itinerary even if you aren’t staying here! It is definitely one of the best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days.

Designed by the chairman of the British School of Architecture for Umay Singh, this palace boasts 347 rooms. It took 15 years of engineering, 3,000 laborers, and 11 million rupees to complete this monumental task, which culminated in 1943.

Serving as the primary residence for the Jodhpur royal family, Umai Singh’s passing in 1947 came only four years after the palace’s erection. Despite this, Gaj Singh II, the current maharaja of Jodhpur, still resides within its walls, albeit confined to a portion of the palace, with the rest having been transformed into a magnificent hotel.

Within the Umaid Bhawan Palace, an added attraction is a museum that showcases the palace’s interior, highlighting its graceful Art Deco design. It’s worth staying somewhere this beautiful for your places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days!

2 day Jodhpur itinerary: The Blue City of India

Here’s everything you need to see on a 2 nights Jodhpur itinerary. I was lucky enough to have the locals and staff at my incredible hotel give me all the advice needed. Here are all the best places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days.

The blue city… the beautiful alleyways, the street art, the architecture, the amazing hotels… you can’t go wrong!

Places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days: The Blue Corridor, The Old City and the Murals

Obviously the blue corridor old city is first on the MUST visit list for tourist places in Jodhpur. You must meander through the narrow alleyways. explore the hidden crevices and admire the blue murals and artworks. Take a look at some of the fascinating artworks dotted around the old city.

For the most part, the alleyways were full of playing children and clear of waste, but the further out of the centre you walk, you might find piles of rubbish build up, which can be a little sad as you will often find animals rooting through it for food. Some of it is difficult to see, but the more tourism there is, the better the situation improves and still worth visiting as one of your places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days.

Pachetia Hill

This is definitely one of the best places to see in Jodhpur in 2 days! Pachetia Hill viewpoint is the absolute best viewpoint in Jodhpur, make sure you can go at sunset.

From there, you can see the entire blue heaven spread out before you, with its many houses and buildings painted in different shades of blue.

Don’t be tempted to stop at the first viewpoint; keep walking up until you reach the area of blue fencing as this is where you’ll find the most densely concentrated area of blue buildings.

Toorji Ka Jahlra: Symmetrical Stairs with a Story

Another spot that left a lasting impression on me was Toorji Ka Jahlra, also known as the Stepwell Square. This historic site features a beautiful symmetrical staircase that leads down to a well. Not only is it a stunning piece of architecture, but it also has a fascinating history. According to local legend, the stepwell was built by a queen who wanted to provide water for her subjects during a time of drought. One of my favourite places to visit Jodhpur in 2 days!

Mehrangarh Fort: Overlooking the Blue City

One of the highlights of Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh Fort, which is one of the largest forts in India.

Amongst the grandest fortresses in India, this stands as one of the largest and definitely, the most impressive. It gracefully sits 400 feet above the Blue City, giving you the perfect view to gaze over the charming blue houses of the Blue Heaven of India.

Back in 1459 AD, Rao Jodha undertook the construction of this fort. The fort’s architecture is in classic style with beautiful yellow sandstone walls and domed arches; make sure you book onto a tour so you can learn more about the history of this incredible place. Don’t forget to visit Chamunda Mata temple which is located on the southern end of the fort.

Tip: don’t forget to visit the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park! Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was created with the aim of restoring the natural environment of a vast, rocky barren area situated next to the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.

Covering about 170 acres, there’s a huge area to roam. Across the seasons, numerous exquisite and distinct flowers flourish here, ensuring that whenever you visit, there’s always something new to admire.

Jaswant Thada: The Taj Mahal of Rajasthan

Jaswant Thada was described to me as the Taj Mahal of Rajasthan. This stunning marble monument was built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II and is located just a short(ish) walk from the Mehrangarh Fort so it’s worth walking over and doing both monuments in the same day, although bear in mind the heat!

It’s the perfect place for an instagrammable shot on the staircases leading up. The white marble building doesn’t look like the Taj Mahal to me but its certainly unique, more like a grand palace; the white marble can be pretty dazzling in the bright sunlight, be prepared to fiddle around with your camera settings to get a shot.

Ghanta Ghar and the bustling Sardar markets

Ghanta Ghar Jodhpur India, Adriana Neptuna Wanderlicious
Places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days: Ghanta Ghar

Ghanta Ghar, the Clock Tower of Jodhpur, is a popular landmark that you should definitely stop by. The sentiment behind the monument is quite touching; it was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh in the 19th century to provide employment to the famine-stricken population of Jodhpur City.

The tower sits right in the middle of the bustling Sardar market; the noise, the smells and the vibrant colours hit you all at once. You hear market sellers calling out, the taxis honking and the cows roaming the streets around you. It’s also the perfect place to people-watch. Sadar market sellers sit on the floor selling fresh fruit and vegetables, jewellery, and all the clothes you could think of and I actually ended up buying some cute pink two pieces here.

You can also climb up the tower; I wish I did but it was too hot and I thought I might die at midday. The view from the top is meant to be breath-taking, with panoramic views of the blue city stretching out.

Abandoned Mandore Gardens

For those seeking something special, make sure to add this to your list of places to see in Jodhpur over two days. Mandore used to be the ancient capital of the Jodhpur kings, which already adds to its intrigue. It was left behind when the rulers of Jodhpur shifted to Mehrangarh Fort.

Nowadays, the area is filled with lush green gardens, impressive architecture, lovely birds, and a few street vendors, as well as mischievous monkeys. Keep an eye on the monkeys, they can steal your belongings if you’re not careful, I’ve seen it a few times!

You’ll come across remarkable architecture, both inside and out. Just wander around, and you’ll stumble upon new discoveries at every corner.

There’s also a museum that is worth checking out, it requires a small entrance fee.

The gardens are open daily from 8 am to 8 pm, while the museum closes at 5 pm. Not only is it stunning, but it’s also abandoned, which means there will be far less tourists around.

Bishnoi Village & Safari

If you have time, take a look at Bishnoi village and stop by the Safari, which is around 22km from Jodhpur village. The Bishnois are famous for their love of wild animals and are protect the Indian Antelope. Bishnoi village safari is known for their incredible textiles, bags, clothing etc. at Bishnoi safari village and it’s really worth stopping to visit.
